Economic Sufficiency

The Bottomless Closet of Milwaukee works to improve the status of women by providing work appropriate, gently-used clothing and supportive services to women who are entering or re-entering the workforce so that they can become self-sufficient and develop greater self-esteem. Founded in 1997, Bottomless Closet is an affiliate of The Women’s Alliance, a national organization of independent community-based members who provide professional attire and career skills to low-income women and families seeking self sufficiency. Since its inception, Bottomless Closet provided services to approximately 10,000 women. Annually, Bottomless Closet serves nearly 1,000 women at the offices located at 6040 W. Lisbon Ave., Milwaukee.

The Center for Teaching Entrepreneurship has been helping kids find their place in the business world since 1991. Students age 9 to 24—mostly urban African-Americans from single parent households—get exposed to the concept of business ownership and leadership. Students receive training in entrepreneurship, technology, business etiquette and networking, as well as in the fundamentals: reading, writing and mathematics.

The Center for Law and Social Policy CLASP is a national non-profit that works to
improve the lives of low-income people. CLASP’s mission is to improve the economic security, educational and workforce prospects, and family stability of low-income parents, children, and youth and to secure equal justice for all. Their mission is to develop and advocate for policies at the federal, state and local levels that improve the lives of low income people. In particular, they seek policies that work to strengthen families and create pathways to education and work.

The focus of Intercession, Inc., centers around its core program, Transition to Independence, which is designed to ensure that homeless, minor parents can live in a safe and appropriate adult-supervised setting. Transition to Independence will provide a continuum of effective services that facilitate healing and growth for emotionally and behaviorally at-risk youth and families to prepare them for successful community living.

Mom’s Rising isa nonprofit organization working to bring together millions of people who share a common concern about the need to build a more family-friendly America. Started in May of 2006, MomsRising has gained over 150,000 citizen members and is rapidly growing. More than 85 national and state organizations have signed on to be aligned with MomsRising. Our members are bringing important motherhood and family issues to the forefront of the country’s awareness.

The mission of 9to5, National Association of Working Women is to build a movement to achieve economic justice by engaging directly affected women to improve working conditions. Founded in 1973, 9to5 is a grassroots membership organization with activists in more than 200 cities and members in every state.

The Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC) is an economic development corporation providing quality business education, technical assistance and access to capital for entrepreneurs. Established in 1989, WWBIC consults, educates and mentors owners of small and micro businesses throughout Wisconsin. We concentrate our efforts with women, people of color and those of lower incomes.


Vision 2020 is a campaign to end child poverty in Wisconsin by the year 2020, and is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families (WCCF), the Wisconsin Head Start Association and the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP). The campaign’s policy goals are focused on four areas:

  • family-supporting wages,
  • safe & affordable housing,
  • access to healthcare & nutrition, and
  • early childhood learning.

Vital Signs , a new project of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, now offers one online location where six metropolitan Milwaukee economic measures, from unemployment to basic needs, are updated each month, giving the community one easy location to find important information. Vital Signs also offers analysis that tells the stories behind the numbers with additional information on programs that work and how the community can help.
