Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee County Supervisor Elizabeth M. Coggs released the following statement in response to the recovery of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett:
“It is my pleasure to commend Mayor Barrett for the courageous actions he took over the weekend. It is refreshing to see that chivalry is not dead. We all thank the Mayor for intervening on behalf of a woman and her child to ensure their safety—and save their lives! It’s clear that, as in medieval times, Mayor Barrett is standing like a knight in shining armor.
The juxtaposition between Mayor Barrett and the young girl who recently stabbed her stepfather illustrates the challenges faced by our society today. She represents the many children thrown into a world of pain, abuse and neglect, but was overlooked by the child welfare system. It is my hope that the judicial arm of government will look at this case and provide the sensitivity needed for this child. Many children who are abused and neglected do not have a voice in our society.
Mayor Barrett stood up to protect a child in our community. I encourage people in all neighborhoods to take a stand against violence and aggression. Protect and preserve the freedoms that people of all ages enjoy in America today. Mayor, we are all glad to see that you are well on your way to recovery. May god bless you and your family through the rest of your healing.”
