CWRSN meeting at Girl Scout Office, Monday, May 22, 2006 in Wausau

Reviewing responses submitted at the May 9th forum on education with Supt. Elizabeth Burmaster and four area superintendents, Wausau, Everest, Wisconsin Rapids, and Mosinee.

-Maintain excellent public schools.
Keep the public apprised of what is going on in schools with continued forums.
-Develop solutions with broad support of community leaders, public and private.
-Continue having community forums.
-Parents participate in their children’s education.
-Connect educational objectives to youth’s motivations.
-Allow students to make decisions and taste consequences at a younger age.
-Be inspired by what can be, not react in fear to second place in test scores.
-Relate testing to the above goal.
-Pay particular attention to budget planning and voting.
How is it determined?
How public funding is available and standards are required of private schools?
What public funding is available and standards are required for home schooling?
What better way is there to fund schools than with property taxes?
Why are there revenue caps?
How do we gain legislative support for the needs of public schools?
How do those not connected with schools gain from public schools?
-Clarify role of schools in the economic development of the Central Wisconsin community.
-Strengthen business-education collaborations.
-Start world languages in elementary schools.
-Work on areas of reading, poverty, and early childhood.
-Get ride of Target on Education with districts for Health Insurance in contracts for teachers PK-16.
-Evaluate what kids really need, what needs to be done to achieve that.
-Recognize student isolation and work to eliminate it.

Burning questions need to be asked in future forums by those most involved with the issues. Possible forum participants include school board members, parents, teachers, non-school advocates for education, and opponents of public school funding. Sign-in should be staffed and include name, address, phone number, e-mail, and organization.

Actions: Have representatives from various groups attend school board meetings as well as other governmental meetings, such as, county board.

Next meeting is Tuesday, June 6th, brown bag at noon on Scout Office front porch!
