Women & Green Economy - Seeking Student Volunteers for Policy Forum
Christine Lidbury of the Wisconsin Women’s Counsel is looking for 4 students to attend a policy forum on women and jobs in the green economy on October 29th here in Madison as note takers during roundtable sessions. The session are part of a half-day forum hosted by the US Department of Labor, WI Department of Workforce Development and Wisconsin Women’s Council.
WWC would like students to attend the whole half-day program, if possible, and take notes on the discussion. WWC knows Madison is not all that convenient for most of your students, but can provide travel reimbursement at state rate. Each student would also be assigned as a note taker to a table when we break up into small group roundtable discussions. A flyer for the event is attached. Preference is for students who are seniors or grad students who can work independently at this task and may have had some policy science or other methods type classes that will help them follow the discussion and take good quality notes.
Date: Thursday, October 29, 2009
Time: 8:30 am to Noon

Genesis for this Event:
On Earth Day 2009, Secretaries Solis (US DOL) and Chu (US DOE) hosted a roundtable in Washington DC on women and green jobs. DOL Women’s Bureau offices around the country are co-hosting similar state-based roundtables.
These forums will generate a national report from the US DOL on women and green jobs - trends, barriers, opportunities and best practices. Secretary Solis was also the author of the federal Green Jobs Act when she served in Congress and is interested in ensuring women are part of the emerging green economy.
It is WWC’s goal that Wisconsin be well represented in the US DOL report that will be generated from these state-based roundtables and, moreover, that we can bring forward our state’s leadership and the wealth of programs, information and expertise related to the green economy already available in Wisconsin.
Background
The forum is being hosted by the US Department of Labor Women’s Bureau, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the Wisconsin Women’s Council. The event will host business, government and other community leaders to discuss Green Jobs for Women in Wisconsin. Similar roundtables
are being hosted in partnership with the USDOL Women’s Bureau in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
The social and political momentum of green jobs has garnered interest, legislation and dollars to encourage the development of green work and industries across Wisconsin. But where do women - as individuals, business owners, and leaders of community organizations - fit in to this momentum?
And, if they don’t, how will we engage them? This forum will feature green economy and business experts and provide a forum to discuss current and emerging trends in the context of barriers and opportunities to advance the women in Wisconsin in green jobs.
