The Liberian Assistance Program Presents Iron Ladies of Liberia Documentary
Please join the Liberian Assistance Program for a screening of Iron Ladies of Liberia, an inspiring film about the struggles of the West African country of Liberia, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23. This award-winning documentary depicts the struggles of Liberia after 15 years of war and the election and first year in office of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman head of state in Africa. The event will be held in the Anderson Auditorium on the Edgewood College campus and is sponsored by the Liberian Assistance Program (LAP) and Edgewood’s Center for Global Studies.
LAP is a non-profit group that raises funds to build schools and support Liberian students from elementary through college. It was formed by long-time Madison residents Judy Reed, a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia in the 1960s, and Jane Scharer, who joined Judy on a visit to Liberia in 2007. Through Reed and Scharer’s efforts and the support of community members, LAP has built a new school in Cow Field, supported a school in the small village of Gbonkonimah, and sent students to school at the elementary and college levels.
The film will be followed by a brief question and answer session and information on ways to help in Liberia. There will also be a drawing for a wood cut painting of a “Liberian Girl,” by Scharer, a Madison artist. There is no charge for attending but contributions for LAP will be happily accepted. Parking is available on campus, in the ramp off Monroe St. For more information, call Judy at 233–0775 or visit www.liberianassistanceprogram.org
